Along with Australia's original human inhabitants, galahs have lived around Woodside for thousands of years.
Most of the Aborigines - in this case, the Permangk people - were forcibly moved away, but the native wildbirds have survived here. Yes, they are an ancient indigenous species, and as such, should be shown a higher level of care and respect. Actually, some people believe these gentle little 'parrots' are the descendants of dinosaurs - maybe a bit like those gigantic, make believe bird monsters who ran amok in a 'Jurassic Park' movie a few years ago.
Whatever, each year, a lot of our country's unique animals and birdlife keeps having its natural habitat destroyed or removed - only to be covered by new roads, farms, houses, shopping centres and/or sports venues. And yet, little old Woodside still remains surrounded by much green, rolling pastureland with many great gum trees for galahs to make their homes in.
That is, as long as you don't fall out of your nest as a little baby bird.
